The Insider carries a full force emotional punch and is as addictive from start to finish as anything from Philip-Morris. Russell Crowe delivers an amazing performance as the conflicted tobacco executive Dr. Jeffrey Wigand, struggling to do the right thing and hold on to the life he has created. His performance is so full of tension and dread, you can't help but feel his pain as his world comes unglued. Al Pacino is at his hyper-intense best as the sluething 60 Minutes producer, Lowell Bergman. As all he believed in shows it's corruption, he holds on to the last thing a man has...his word. Supporting performances are stellar throughout, particularly that of Bruce McGill as attorney Ron Motley. McGill, a veteran supporting player who started his movie career as D-Day in Animal House and has lent his considerable talents to TV and films for 30 years, has little screen time, but produces the films most powerful scene. His courtroom lambasting of a Tobacco lawyer played by Wings Hauser, bursts with a visceral realism that can only be summoned when couragously knocking a smirking bully off his high horse. Never before has corporate greed, corruption and power been portayed as effectively as in The Insider. My only regret is it slipped under my radar nearly 8 years since it's release. |
