OK, so it IS a depressing movie if you can't take too much reality in your life. Fact is, this is a carefully constructed film about the darker side of human behavior. People do behave shamefully. People do hurt people they love. People do sometimes take for granted what is most important in their lives. From that vantage point, at least, The Ice Storm will make you think about your own life, your own choices. In these frail, self-involved characters you will see some of yourself, some of the people you have known.
What impressed me most was how well balanced this movie was. From the parents' to their children's perspectives, from the opening to ending scene, this is a movie balanced on the tip of a needle. Somehow, it keeps from falling off, and it's the tension that makes it all so compelling.
In a strange way, this movie reaffirms what is important in life. It gets there the hard way -- the journey is treacherous but well worth it. |
