A masterpiece!

This film, in my opinion, is clearly a masterpiece. I watched it at least 6-10 times. Acting, cinematography, storyline, and music are superb. Ralph Fiennes clearly should have won Best Actor in 1996; however, we realize that American Hollywood types can never truly appreciate real films like this, nor recognize brilliant acting. Look who wins "Best Picture" and "Best Actor" nowadays. It is clearly all about politics, not art. "Best Actor" is assigned based on ethnicity, etc.
"The English Patient" is a film about true art, not Hollywood-type entertainment. The cast is phenomenal (mostly British), led by Ralph Fiennes in his best role ever (save, perhaps, "Wuthering Heights"). The subdued emotion in his words and glances are chilling. Once again, he is our Nietzschean hero, our rugged individualist who is uncompromising and unrelenting. Juliette Binoche is very strong in her role as well, providing levity and humour upon occasion with her girlish ways.
This movie reminds why all the good actors are on the other side of the big pond (the Atlantic) and why Ralph Fiennes is truly THE MASTER! Anyone who disagrees is more than likely one of these American/Hollywood idiots who goes to the movies out of boredom to see big explosions, special effects, and foul language. |
