American author John Irving who wrote the Academy Award winning screenplay which was adapted from his novel The Cider House Rules [1985], a coming of age period piece set in the backdrop of an orphanage in Maine. Swedish born director Lasse Hallstrom focuses deeply on his characters who play there roles convincingly to the script. The young but striving Tobey Maguire comes nicely to the for-front in his most difficult exhibition to date, assisting him strongly is Michael Caine who won an Oscar for his supporting performance, and other credited performances by Charlize Theron, Delroy Lindo, Paul Rudd, Jane Alexander and Kathy Baker. The film deals with the delicate matter of abortions, which was illegal in the 1930s and 1940s the time frame the film was set. There are three earlier films adapted by John Irving novels, The World According To Garp [1982], The Hotel New Hampshire [1984] and Simon Birch [1998].
