The Birds..Hitch at his best

A favourite of mine of his works, the effects might seem clumsy in some parts but in others still stand the test of time. No dodgy CGI's that so many of today's "Blockbusters" rely on & which only look credible in a few features (ok, so there are a few blue screens!). What works for me is the lack of explanation (I just hate it when the audience is treated like a child and every little plot twist and action has to be carefully explained). The meance at the end..is it over?? is just perfect. (Like the implied idea that Tippi's character is a catalyst that started the onslaught, driven on by Jessica Tandy's all suffering mother figure)
The lack of corny incidental music intruding every scene to "make suspense" as it so often does these days. Above it all, taking centre stage above the horror the birds are unleashing is the human drama of jealousy, sexual tension and feelings of betrayal played out by the three adult women (and to a lesser extent by Veronica Cartwright, outstanding as the younger sister) who dominate the film. Top honours to Tippi who nearly suffered a breakdown in shooting that final reel.
I love Rear Window but I feel The Birds leaves enough unsaid it can take repeated viewings and never appears stale. |
