"Some Like it Hot," like many other crossdressing movies, are heavily dependent on strong acting. This film had strong acting not just by comedy standards, but even by drama standards too. It is interesting how such a funny movie can be made from such a serious topic. The beginning of the movie is very true to Wilder's directing style, but from the middle on, things start to drift into the world of loco.
It's great how much Daphne (Lemmon) and Josephine (Curtis) are loved, while the ladies keep on popping bad jokes about men! Meanwhile, the disturbing millionaire disregards Daphne's true identity with the famous last line of the movie which I will not spoil.
The one thing that disappointed me a little was the ending. I felt really bad for Lemmon's character because he was stuck with marrying a freaky guy while Curtis is right next to him about to marry Marilyn Monroe because of some scam that he pulled on her.
I really can't explain too much about this film. It's just plain funny, but also with a logical plot and great acting and directing as well. Although I am questioning its status as the AFI's funniest comedy, it definitely deserves its spot at #14 on the AFI top 100 films. |
