This is one of the best biographical films ever produced for the big screen. Jennifer Lopez stars in the title role of Selena. Which earned her the first Golden Globe Nomination of her career for Best Actress. Edward James Olmos also stars as the father of Selena, Abraham. Gregory Nava directs this remarkable Film, which also stars Constance Marie, Jon Seda, Jacob Vargas, and Jackie Guerra.
Many would say, this is the film that made Jennifer Lopez into a movie star. Not only by the success of the film, but by the amount of publicity that the film's casting recieved by the hispanic community. Jennifer Lopez earned a paycheck of 1 million dollars, that was the highest ever payed to a latina actress at the time. She had done a few films before this, but nothing of that caliber. Many would compare it to Lou Diamond Phillips performance as Ritchie Valens in "La Bamba."
Many people may have come to know of Selena, only after her death. She was a huge singer/entertainer within the hispanic community in America,and in Latin America as well. But that was about to change with the release of her first english-language album. But tragically as we all know that never came to be.
The film released by Warner Bros. in 1997, chronicles her life and rise to fame up until that point. Her fathers musical past in "Los Dinos," and her childhood in Texas. Then her fathers dicovery of her singing talent and charisma. Then creating and molding his children into a musical group. Years later after performing gig after gig the group/band signs their first record deal and end up becoming a huge success. Eventually leading to their first No 1 Single, and then Selena becoming a success outside of America. Her amazing catalog of music is shown with excellent performances and images. Selena's biggest dream of becoming internationally known is relaized when she given the opportunity to record her first english album. The film shows how much that meant to her and captures it on film. The film also captures Selana's incredible relationship with her close family, friends and her husband Chris Perez.
In closing Selena - Thw Film, shows the personality, passion, and charisma that Selena had. And showed just how much her fans meant her, and how mush she loved to perform, and design her own clothing/costumes as well.
After her death she would become one of the youngest legends that the hispanic community would come to lose so tragically. Placing her with such one named legends as, Elvis, and Marilyn. |
