One of the best loser flicks of all time...

My friend and I recently discussed what genre Safe Men would fall under, and he came up with the concept of loser movies: basically, films we can all relate to, concerning lost and wierd people that we can place, recognize, etc...Safe Men has some of the subtlest humor, that when reading reviews from when the movie was released, one wonders if the reviewers were concious of this. Like most great films of this genre (Big Lebowski, The Stoned Age, and even docs like American Movie, Crumb, etc...), the success relies on the multiple viewings, and the power, comedy and brilliance of such things is often lost on the newness of first viewing. Safe Men has become the basis of many inside jokes, and even proves my point that good movies are still being made. The acting is so excellent and honest, I wonder if that put a lot of people off. There is no trickery, pretense, or any of the standard BS that often infultrates lesser films. The chemistry between Zahn and Rockwell is classic, and the interplay with Paul "Veal Chop" Giammtti and Mark Ruffalo add a tenderness and visual gag each and every time. Throw a fake ass, flammable pants, and the grandaddy of all Bar-Mitzvah scenes into the mix, and you've got comedy gold.
