The idea was ingenious. The idea of Pi being the pattern found in the world. It kinda makes sense when you look at it. But the film was not great, it was just trippy.
Made by the man behind the amazing Requiem For a Dream, Pi is basically a movie that has some weird twists and spins and ends up leaving viewers with a bunch of ideas and questions to speculate about.
The movie is acted very well. It is also filmed in black-and-white, which can be an interesting technique, but fails here. It makes the movie feel like it was made in the 60s and lighting is not used well, some scenes are too dark, and other problems with it. It makes all of the visuals in the movie look terrible, for a 1998 movie.
The reason why Pi irritated me the most is because it seemed like the director was trying to get lucky through pretentious directing methods. He took a wild idea that cannot be proved, made some gobbledy-gook that actually sort of made sense, and then after he was stuck, made the character go crazy and turn the movie into a hodge podge of senseless insanity. It's like the notion that if you make a movie as weird as possible, the audience can find some kind of meaning behind it all.
I suppose there is meaning enough, but it is so out there that it loses all its brilliance. It only makes sense because the script said it does. And I was left with nothing. But maybe that's just me.
Overall, the movie is fair. 2.8/5 stars. |
