First out, I'm a Roberts fan. But I did not enjoy her performance in this movie. Or should I say her character. It's probably impossible for an actress of her caliber to turn in a shoddy performance, so I'll carp about the development of the events and her character.
Her character is more desparate than funny and sometimes just plain mean. In the end, does she really discover that she doesn't have to be married to be happy? It didn't go down that way when I watched it. Only at the very end, when she's put everyone through the wringer, most notably the guy she supposedly "loves," does a light go on - "Hey, maybe he really does love her. Maybe he really doesn't love ME in that way. Gee....maybe I've been a real ass here"...(slinking away hopefully not to be heard from until the birth of their first child)
Cameron Diaz is a total ditz. Hard to believe that this was a breakthrough role for her. She must have absolutely hated this movie. Her fiancee has things better, but still, what a dope. Only Everett's character has any semblance of style, wit, and grace. He saved this film, IMO. Otherwise, it's probably better off on the bottom shelf, in the back........... |
