Larenz Tate and Nia Long are two of the sexiest black actors in Hollywood and their chemistry in "Love Jones" is perfectly fit for a guy and his girl to cuddle up to. It's nice to see black people protrayed like regular citizens vs. gang-banging rappers or prostitutes. "Love Jones" is an excercise in the black dating game, and it comes off weaker then "Set It Off" but stronger then "Waiting to Exhale". Long is a photographer who meets Tate in a Meet Cute sequence in one of Chicago's top Hip-Hop poetry clubs. There's an instant attraction but it takes her longer to realize it since she's getting over a break-up. While "Love Jones" doesn't go over the top in good writing, it succeeds in making us laugh and get turned on by the two stars. Plus the supporting cast plays out very well, including good performances by Isaiah Washington and a sexy Lisa Nicole Carson. Rated R for language and nudity. |
