The Best Buddy Cop Movie

Lethal Weapon is one of the best buddy cop movies ever made. That is kind of ironic because throughout most of the movie, Murtaugh (Glover) hates Riggs (Gibson). By the end of this movie, we see their friendship start to begin, and grow a respect for what each brings to the force. Murtaugh is the type of cop who is by the book. Riggs on the other hand is a suicidal loose cannon, who will do anything to get the job done, even if that means killing the criminal. At the beginning of the film, Murtaugh has turned 50, and has plans on retiring from the force, when Riggs is brought into his life, and becomes his new partner. Even though he is his new partner, it seems if Murtaugh has also been assigned to protect him, from hurting himself, and others around him. There is one scene in which the two of them are inside an empty building, right after Riggs "brought" down someone who was going to jump off a roof. The two men start arguing to one another, and Murtaugh dares Riggs to take the gun and pull the trigger if he is serious about killing himself. After a few seconds of tension, he does pull the trigger, but there aren't any bullets in the barrel. Murtaugh then says, "You really are crazy". This is probably the most tension filled scene in the movie, and is directed brilliantly by Richard Donner. Later on in the plot, Murtaugh's daughter has been kidnapped by a terrorist group, that was originally part of the Army Commandos. The twist is Riggs use to be a part of this group during the Vietnam war, but then broke away. From here on out, the two must find the daughter and get her out of harms way. The last 30 minutes of the film are just plain out action, and its great, and the most effective scene during this, is the climatic scene between Riggs and Gary Busey's character (I forget his name at the moment). This film on the outside is an effective cop thriller, but the underlying plot is a human nature story. That is the magic of this film, and the Riggs character seems to come full circle by the end of it. Lethal Weapon has great direction, a great plot, and great acting. I definetly reccommend this film. |
