Not at all what I expected....in a good way

Some people have commented that they went to see the movie expecting to see a comedy. I thought that's what I was in for, too: Dave Chappelle acting like an idiot on the streets. What I got was a pleasantly surprising concert movie, similar to Jay-Z's Fade to Black
I had no idea that the movie was about a concert, but it was a good concert. Actually, the movie alternates between following Dave Chappelle on the streets as he interacts with people (and acts like the Dave Chappelle we know from Comedy Central), and showing parts of the concert (as well as a much more pensive and philosophical Dave Chappelle). The music is easy to appreciate. The artists (I'm sure you know by now: Kanye West, Common, Dead Prez, Erykah Badu, The Fugees, The Roots, Jill Scott, Talib Kweli, Mos Def....I think that's it) are (or once were) generally underrated performers, who have, unfortunately, been eclipsed in the media by much more mainstream rappers and singers. In other words, the music is GOOD hip-hop and r&b, not "Laffy Taffy" or "I'm N Luv Wit a Stripper".
Plus, every beat is played by the Roots band. Hip-hop has a completely different sound when it's played live, and it's awe-inspiring.
And, of course, it's Dave Chappelle, so it's got its hilarious moments. I'd definitely recommend it, especially if you're open to breaking the mold a little bit. |
