Kundun - Martin Scorsese
by SOULMAN (movies profile) Jan 11, 2009
There are a number of Martin Scorsese's films that I was not able to fully appreciate on the first viewing and Kundun certainly falls into this category. On its first viewing Kundun comes across as a series of beautiful photographs lacking a coherent storyline but this is only because it is a somewhat unconventional film. Much of the story is told through the visual images and symbolism rather than through the conventional narrative so Kundun will be a difficult film for the mainstream viewer to appreciate.

When you finally appreciate this film on its own terms you will find it to be a very powerful and emotionally moving film. There are many reasons why this film is able to achieve this result. The use of unknown actors was a wise decision as all the actors were believable in their characters. Roger Deakins' photography is as spectacular as any you will see in this film and is simply breathtaking at times. Phillip Glass' score is haunting and is especially effective for this fine film. The story is told simply without any embellishment.

This is one of the finest films I have ever seen. Fans of Scorsese's mainstream films may be disappointed by this film but the true admirers of Scorsese's entire body of work will find more reasons to admire him.
