Susanna Kaysen (Winona Ryder) was a girl living her early adult life in the late sixties, and she hadd nowhere to go. She was strongly urged to go take a rest at Claymoore mental hospital. Little did Ryder realize that she was going to be longer then she expected. Keeping all of her thoughts inside a handy diary she waits for the return of her lover Toby Jacobs (Jared Leto) who then attempts to run away with her to Canada. Since the time of her stay there she has learned to grow onto the doctors (Whoopi Goldberg, Vanessa Redgrave, Jeffrey Tambor, Christina Myers, and Alison Claire). Ryder also comes across a new group of not so perfect friends, like the hot head Lisa Rowe (Angelina Jolie), the forever aging scared child Polly 'Torch' Clark (Elisabeth Moss), the everlasting lying roommate Georgina Tuskin (Clea DuVall), the starving daddysgirls Daisy Randone (Brittany Murphy), and Janet Webber (Angela Bettis), the bold butch dike Cynthia Crowley (Jillian Armenante) and the martion's girlfriend "M.G." (Drucie McDaniel). For the two years that Ryder had been there, the insane female group would sneek out of the bedrooms and would tip toe around Redgrave's office searching through there personal files. Ryder and Jolie then become very close to one another, from the point where they attempted to run away to the point where Ryder runs from Jolie trying tosave herself from getting killed. Based on the book by Susanna Kaysen, Ryder wishes that she would have read the book when she was in her late teens and early twenties so that she could have something to relate too. Director, James Mangold, would use the setting of a long hallway to show how lonesome and empty Claymoore was to Susanna but right when it was time for her to leave everyone was standing around her giving her hugs and kisses goodbyes, then transforming the empty hall into a social gathering of the unsteady clan. This film can help any girl relate to life's hard core problems and then make one realize that there are some people out there who have it far worst then what one may come to believe. |
