Uneven but slightly worth watching.

Winona Ryder plays a gal who wants to be her own person and not get segregated into the typical role her mother manifests.
She smokes cigarettes (as does everyone), screws whomever she desires, and wants to be a writer.
Then one day she overdoses on aspirin and vodka so her parents put her in an establishment for women with problems.
She meets Lisa (Angelina Jolie) whose sour yet entertainingly abrasive personality strikes a chord with Rider and they become friends.
A few other misfits join the gang and for a while, the girls form a friendship and really bond with one another.
Then Rider and Jolie decide to break out of the institution and visit a gal who was recently released.
Jolie verball antagonizes the girl (Brittany Murphy) and something bad happens.
Eventually Jolie and Rider return to the hospital and a few months later, Rider is released.
The end got a little preachy and some parts dragged but for at least half the movie, it was entertaining and Rider, Jolie, and Murphy did well in their parts. |
