With every passing year this film seems to become a little more prophetic. Life has imitated Art at a frightening pace, making this lively thriller all the more relevant as it still manages to entertain. Hawke was already a household name (as was Thurman) when this film was produced, but Law also gives a brilliant early performance. Gattaca could have come off as a pedantic, moralistic tale that failed for the obviousness of its intended message. Luckily, better than average acting and good interplay between the characters more than saved this film. The juxtaposition of the ultra-sleek, clean-lined material culture of this vision of the future and the underlying moral and spiritual turmoil we get in the performances of Hawke and company provides a brilliant contrast. |
