Gattaca is an intriging movie. While it may seem futuristic it is only around the corner for the next generation. With genectic engineering comes many new problems for our society. While they may be able to try to play God, they will fail miserably. It is true that there is no gene for the human spirit. We see this when Vincent and his bother Anton are younger in the scene where they attempt to be blood brothers. While Anton appears to be superior we see his fears of cutting himself and at the same time we see Vincent has no fear of letting his blood. This was the beginning of Vincent knowing he could outwit his brother as he did in the swimming competition. At some point Vincent found there was another side to swim to instead of swimming back to shore. Anton not being aware of this, feared going to far for he could not return to shore. Vincent out smarted him by playing on Anton's fears. He knew he could keep going beyond the limit because there was another side to swim to while his brother feared drowning, but the need for competition was so strong that Anton pushed himself beyond what he could achieve and Vincent saved his brother's life. Genetic engineering will never be able to predict the true outcome of ones will to overcome weakness in the body or spirit. |
