Deepa Mehta's film explores the nature of love between two women who have one thing in common, husbands who negelect their wives' desires and aspirations. Discussing not only the feminine love in the form of Lesbianism this film also throws light on the suppressed conditions of women in contemporary India. The movie is about Radha and her younger sister-in-law Sita. Radha's husband Ashok opted for celibacy when he realized his wife was barren and Sita's husband continues his pre-marriage affair with a chinese girl. The two women discover a secret desire for each other as they both wanted to see the ocean. A very thought provoking film with outstanding music. |
