I was reading some of the suggested topics (for kicks) to the right of this review panel and noticed "what is the film trying to say?" Strangely, I can't figure that out exactly... but I like it anyways, and I'm a pretty picky movie go'er. Story is a loosely constructed montage of madness disguised as news reporting assignments. Excessive use galore of drugs I've never even heard of (adrenal gland??? wtf!?). The 'attorney' is played very adequately by Benito Del Toro (Snatch, Traffic, Usual Suspects). Oddly, he doesn't really seem to fit the usual attorney profile, and the movie remains vague enough that you can't tell if he's just lying or if drugs stole his personae. Johnny Depp stars and does a remarkable job keeping the madness anchored with his cigarette holder, hat, sunglasses, and tennis shorts. He's definitely an underrated actor. One of the best reasons to watch this film is to see the bathtub scene which eerily plays out the reality of someone having a 'bad trip' on LSD. Probably the truest of drug usage scenes in the movie. The direction is, for the most part, typically disjointed for a Gilliam piece. He probably stole a few tricks from Oliver Stone ("Natural Born Killers"). Maybe it was the whole desert connection thing frying my mind, maybe the residual drugs... either way, this movie is highly entertaining and histerical when you're not focused on the fact they're truly suffering for their comedy. |
