This is a very charming and original take on a well known story. Through cutting out all the magical clap-trap and singing mice of Disney fame this film becomes more believable and more enchanting as there are few cringe-worthy moments. This film deals with the problem of royalty marrying below their station as well as putting across a powerfully socialist message. The love story unfolds beautifully and the characters of the step-sisters are given depth and motive rather than just being "evil".
The acting throughout was brilliant especially Angelica Houston and the giirl who played Margerite:they both came across as very cruel and self involved. Drew Barrmore and Dougray Scott did the best with the at times cheesy script and there really was chemistry between them.
The visuals of this film were stunning as the masquerade begins so fantastically and then becomes garish as Danielle is betrayed. The sweeping panaramic shots of the French countryside and castles give this film a grand air and evoke rustic life in Franc beautifully.
All in all this film is an enchanting fairytale that is both moving and funny. |
