chinatown is a great picture, if u watch it all the way through. its got great visuals classic of Polanski films; the slow buildup of suspense as opposed to the quick cut shots we see so much of today. additionally, it has a good score, great music that associates itself so well with chinatown. jack nicholson plays a PI who investigates a murder of a WAter plant owner. through some twists and turns, he finds the truth, which includes faye dunaway and her father. a dark story about the flaws of justice and the fall of truth and morality, Chinatown is much less a place then a state of being.
with many many great parts all contributing to the movie, including robert towne's script and polanski's experiences during that time which drew him to fight for a different ending than intended, Chinatown is nearly a masterpiece...nearly. its one great flaw was the twists and turns in the storyline that, although does not play a huge part in understanding the movie, can throw a viewer off. the first time i saw this, i did not understand completely what was going on with the water plant, the land, and the company giants, but by the end of hte movie, i did not even care. however, as i went over the movie afterwards, i realized that some pieces were missing to me, and couldnot connect the dots on some of hte plot twists. alot of the water scandal was not made too clear, because we are always kept in the dark, just like detective Gittes(nicholson). althouhg most of it will come through in the end, i believe this is a movie to watch more than once, not only beacuse it gets better everytime, but also to clear up some of hte vague points of plot. this film was hindered by one too many unclear plot twists, but overall, it is still a great picture and shows off Polanski as a made director.
