After suffering a depression/identity crisis, Jay Billington Bulworth (Warren Beatty) hires a man to kill him. In a bid to be re-elected to the senate, Bulworth has lost his will to live. He starts to let it all hang out, and meets Halle Berry, who is smitten with in an enigmatic way. After a trip to a dominantly black dance club, he starts to talk in rhyme. This is funny at first, as Beatty raps to a fundraiser audience, but he never stops throughout the whole movie. It gets old fast, and the movie could not end soon enough for me.
The message of the movie is a just one, calling attention to the corrupt nature of politicians and calling attention to the people who get left behind. But this script was just obnoxious. Anyone who likes this movie only says so because the critics loved it. But the critics are stupid. This movie just plain sucks. I cringed when Beatty's face appeared on the screen, and I like Beatty. This would have been a good movie if it had been condensed to about 25-30 minutes. If you want to see a movie about politics, watch Bob Roberts, with Tim Robbins. It is a masterpiece. Bulworth is just awful. |
