The movie begins with a short bit explaining Teena Brandon's tendency to disguise herself as a man and date women. This is an entertaining sort of prologue that showcases Hilary Swank's tremendous acting credibilities and Kimberly Peirce's superb directing talents.
After this prelude the movie begins to introduce a collection of other colorful characters that eventually become the focus of the movie apart from Teena. This is when the movie stops being merely mildly entertaining and becomes very entertaining. Teena Brandon joins this band of friends under the guise of Brandon Teena. A strange love story formulates between John's love, Lanna, and Teena that is slightly humorous to watch because of the dramatic irony. Unlike Lanna, you know that she is having a relationship with a female.
Everything goes well for Teena for a while. Her lover hasn't discovered that she isn't male yet and her friends treat her well and like a buddy. However, she receives a speeding ticket and presents a fake ID to the officer and not only that but fails to appear at court. This lands her in jail temporarily. Temporarily as in just long enough for her friends back in Falls City to begin to notice strange things such as the fact that the newspaper story about their speeding ticket has the name Teena Brandon instead of Brandon Teena, and that "Brandon Teena" is occupying a women's jail cell. Not to mention the booklet about transexuals and those with a sexual identity crisis in her bag. This discovery has dire consequences that change everyone's lives in a single moment.
This is a truly great movie with great acting from all those involved and a moving true story about being who you are. The directing is so near perfection it can smell it and the visuals of fast moving lights on the road and this small place called Fall's City are close to breath-taking.
Most definitely one of the saddest movies in cinematic history and undoubtedly one of the best. A movie that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. |
