Though immensely charming at the time, it seems "Babe" will not stand the test of history. After just ten years, it is largely forgotten. The special effects for making the animals talk, which won the film its lone Oscar, seem incredibly mundane by today's standards, showing just how far the field has gone. (It beat Apollo 13 for that!) The greatest accomplishment of this film is that it managed to be good despite the ridiculous cesspool of a premise that is its genre (the talking baby/animal live action genre). The setting is archaic and wonderful, the story is sufficiently dark and meandering, with a touching end, and the film does not fall for any live-action family film staples, instead plotting a substantial dramatic course. The farmer is by far the best character in the film, and the acting of Cromwell probably was the only warranted Oscar nomination (you could make an argument for art direction). However, its pedigree prevents it from being dubbed a "classic." That, and its sequel.
