Just watch this movie. Watch a person who is barely capable of human contact become a person that people look up to. We find out that Mr. Udall is suffering from OCD and is unable to even help himself because of his fear of medication. But when his life is disrupted because of a sick child he has to use his imagination for more than just writing best sellers, and picking on people, and must try to get himself back to his comfort zone. As he steps outside himself he steps into the places of others and his journey of discovery makes us see the all too human being residing within the pushy, arrogant, creep. Helen is superb as the long suffering mother, with just enough of her own problems to push back at Jack. And then, throw in one suffering barely out of the closet homosexual, and you have some kind of mix. What an entertaining bunch? Just watch as Mr. Udall tries to get back to himself and ends up somewhere else. It is as good as it gets. |
