Houston, we have a great movie!

This was the best movie up to its time, outdone only by "October Sky" and "A Beautiful Mind." Only nine months after Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, what was supposed to have been the third lunar landing was considered to have been "as exciting as taking a trip to Pittsburgh," according to one of the news reporters in the movie. All of a sudden, five of history's most famous words, "Houston, we have a problem," led to another five more famous words, "Failure is not an option."
Not too long ago, the History Channel showed the movie Apollo 13 and then the real Apollo 13. The movie did an excellent job of showing how everyone involved beat incredible odds and got the astronauts back to Earth. I was particularly impressed by Ken Mattingly's role. It has been said the if Mattingly, who was replaced two days before launch by backup astronaut Jack Swigert, had not gotten bumped from Apollo 13, the astronauts probably would have died in space and never made it back.
