Recently I felt it was time to rent a movie of the science fiction genre. I came across "Alien," and tried to remember what I had heard about it, which wasn't too much. I had never been a fan of this certain series myself, although I had heard the enthusiasm and excitement that came about when one of its sequels were released. After some consideration, I decided to give it a try. What I came to find was that "Alien" is not only a rare, grotesquely appealing movie -- it is a picturesque masterpiece, that most likely introduced and influenced future science fiction filmmakers, authors, and fans.

The movie takes place in the future and follows the seven members of the space vessel known as the "Nostromo." They are awakened from hypersleep by a supercomputer affectionately named "Mother," who notifies them that they have received a distress alert from an unidentified nearby planet. The crew decides to investigate.

The group finds an alien spacecraft. Inside are a number of alien eggs. Kane, one of the members of the Nostromo, gets too close to one of the eggs and it hatches, releasing an alien organism that wraps itself onto his face. The thing puts on quite a grip too, considering that it was just born. Kane is taken to a medical facility and sometime later, the crew comes to find that the alien has left his face and that Kane has made a full recovery.

After the crew decide all is well, they decide to have a meal before going back to sleep. During the meal, Kane begins to choke, and suddenly, out of his chest bursts out the alien, in one of the most gruesome sequences I've ever seen in a movie.

In a state of fear, shock, and anxiety, the crew look for the alien, and in turn, are hunted down by it. One by one, the creature attacks each member, and after doing so, increases its size and power. Once worrying about what to do before going to sleep, the crew members now only worry about survival.

H.R. Giger's alien being is a work of art, beautifully designed and presented. The special effects still hold up and the alien continues to frighten me to this day. Ridley Scott's direction and Giger's creature make for an amazing movie.

Even after 20 years, this movie remains the most frightening, repulsive, and beautiful of all science fiction films. This movie is another example of how technology does not affect how great a movie is and can be over time. Guaranteed to make you uneasy, concerned, and terrified, "Alien" is a rare cinematic milestone that should not be missed.
