Have you ever wondered what it would be like if a robot crashed onto Earth instead of an alien? The Iron Giant is a film similar to E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, because they're both about how a life form of a different type befriends a human. But thankfully, they didn't copy off E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Instead of an alien, they chose a big metal giant.
This movie takes place in Maine during the 50's. The hero of the story is a young boy named "Hogarth"(Eli Marienthal) who one night discovers that something has eaten his TV antennae. Reccently hearing from a man who talked about an Invader from Mars falling from the sky, he thinks that it's a unique life-form that he follows into the forest. When Hogarth saves the creature from being totally electrocuted by an electricity base, he meets the creature again the next morning, and he starts by telling him what a rock is and what a tree is. This creature is an Iron Giant(voiced by Vin Diesel) and Hogarth begins visiting the Giant every day in the forest, while keeping it a secret from his mother(Jennifer Anniston).
On of the tragic scenes in The Iron Giant is when Hogarth and the Giant witness the shooting of a deer. Though the Giant may be a big heap of metal, it has very strong feelings for the deer, and Hogarth explains to him about how while the deer may have died, it has a soul, and souls don't die. This is a scene that you wouldn't really expect from the movie, and it also makes the movie much better. But the army is also tied to whether the Giant is real or not, especially the notorious General Mansley. During the end of the movie when Hogarth nearly dies, the Giant thinks that he is dead, and when the army is attacking it, it goes into a rage frenzy and turns into a big gun-wielding menace. The Giant also nearly reacted when it saw the gun that the hunters used to shoot the deer.
The Iron Giant is one of the best animated films that Warner Bros. has ever made. The user who complained about how Hogarth told the Giant that guns are bad kind of has a point, but Hogarth wasn't really saying that guns were bad. He was explaining to the Giant that they are very dangerous, but I'm sure he wasn't against the fact that guns can give humans food(except for the deer incident). When I saw this movie in theaters, I loved it, and I still do. |
