The Scariest Movie Of All-Time

"The Blair Witch Project" is scarier than Michael, Jason, and Freddy put together, mixed up, and spit out as a new slasher-killer. No movie like that could ever evoke the complete fear you feel when watching this movie. Blood and gore will never live up to what our imaginations can provide us with. The directors of this movie understands this and use it to their full advantage.
Three film makers (Heather, Josh, and Michael) go in the woods to film a documentary about a local legend for their film class. They never come back, and a year after their disappearance their footage is found and what you see in this movie is that footage.
No movie that I can think has ever used a set-up quite like this. Yeah so you're making a movie, but why can't you make the audience THINK it's real? Wouldn't the scariness have a greater effect if everyone thought this had really happened. The answer is, of course, yes. I doubt the movie would have been have as scary if you would have thought of it as a fictionalized movie. Instead, though, your fear is raised because you think in the back of your mind that three people really were lost in those woods a few year ago. The one problem I have, the one thing the movie takes for granted, is that people would keep the camera on while all this freaky stuff was going on. But I also understand that there wouldn't be much of a movie if they turned the camera of during the best parts. All in all, this is one of the best ideas to come out of Hollywood in awhile.
Another method to bring about the realism of this movie is that the actors portray themselves to an extent. That is, they use their real names. Heather is the bossy director, Josh is the laid-back cameraman, and Mike is the nervous soundman. One of the keys to this movie is that the actor seem very real and very natural. This could probably be attributed to the fact that much of the dialouge in the movie was improvised, therefore it was real. The actors do a good job of showing the psychological deterioration that could occur from being lost in the woods and having all these strange occurences go on around them. I was very impressed with the actors' ability to create 3 characters who seemed like real people you could meet on the street.
Obviously, what makes "The Blair Witch Project" the scariest movie ever is its one simpe rule: everything is up to your imagination. You can become immune to gore and violence, but one thing no one could ever escape is what's inside their own head. The directors leave it up to you to imagine what's just outside the screen, they leave you to wonder what's making that noise, they leave you to decide what the hell is going on out there. And that makes the movie so scary. It'll be different for every person, and that makes it so interesting. Everyone will react differently. This movie is a breakthrough for horror, but Hollywood BEWARE! Such an effect cannot be achieved again. Please leave this movie to revel in its glory and do not turn it into a laugh-a-thon like every other once-decent horror franchise.
To put it simply, "The Blair Witch Project" will scare the s--t out of you. It's impossible to avoid it. No matter how tough you think you are, something in your mind will trigger a reaction throughout your whole body that will evoke the greatest fear you have ever felt. Don't believe me? Then go watch this movie. Next night, sleep in the woods. I dare you. |
