The story traces the painful dissolution of a relationship (Leguizamo & Sorvino), which occurs in NYC in 1977 while Son of Sam was on the loose. The film did not get much attention when it came out, which is sad because John Leguizamo is amazing in the leading role. Mira Sorvino and Adrien Brody are also excellent. The critics were not kind to this either, although I do know why. Although Spike Lee directed this film, it was mostly written by others (thankfully). The few additions by Lee -- the completely extraneous race relations components -- are the weakest elements, but are few and far between. The story is engrossing and moving and the concept of framing marital strife with the concurrent activities and public fear of an insane killer oddly works in creating a tone of sadness and dread. |
