I know, I know some of you probably found this film to be uplifting and inspiring. I thought it was derivative, unoriginal, pandering, pretentious and with no real thought put into it whatsoever. Anyone could make a movie as cookie-cutter and as shameless as this one. And the perfect star for such a movie is the warm and fuzzy Robin Williams. There are three Robin Williams, okay? The quiet and sometimes creepy Robin from Insomnia, the Final Cut and One Hour Photo. The Dramatic Actor Robin who does fine work in Awakenings, the World According to Garp and Moscow on the Hudson. Then there's the warm an fuzzy, non-acting Robin who stars in movies like this and House of D and What Dreams May Come and others. Actually there's four Robins, to be correct, because I left out the comedic Robin of Mrs. Doubtfire. This guy is all over the map. Sometimes I like him, sometimes I don't. This mess isn't all his fault. The script is shameless and the heart wrenching scenes are pretentious and purposely melodramatic. The life and times of Hunter Adams must've been interesting but here it gets the stale treatment. We don't get to know what drives this man and who he really is. The good supporting cast including Monica Potter and Phillip Hoffman are wasted in stereotype roles. The dialogue is horrid. The melodramatic scenes are terrible. Potter, his love interest is killed and Patch feels like giving up and sees a butterfly and is re-inspired. Please! This could've actually worked but is executed so poorly that it comes off as lousy and insulting. I can't recommend this drivel to anyone. Especially not children. "Shallow Hal" had a better message.
