This movie is very funny at times, I found myself laughing out loud at some scenes...and this is why I consider it a DVD collection must have. If you like comedy/slapstick then you will have fun watching this movie. The concept is this: A broke-ass director by the name of Bobby Bowfinger wants to make a film and sell it to one of the "major" movie studios, making him instantly rich and famous. I know, it doesnt sound funny...until I tell you that the broke director is played by Steve Martin. So now picture this.... Steve Martin as the poor, broke director who doesn't get any respect from his peers. His budget is just big enough to buy a state of the art refrigerator, he can't pay any big name actors, he has no equipment. But he does have friends and he does have ambition. This sets up funny things to come. For example , when he needs a film crew he does what any up and coming wannabe director would do...he goes to the California/Mexican border and snatches illegal aliens fleeing from the border patrol (its not a long scene, but still a very funny scene) and no it isn't funny because border crossing Mexicans are being persecuted, it's a funny scene because Steve Martin is a damn fool!!!!!
The funny just keeps coming...enter Eddie Murphy who plays dual roles in this film. He plays Kit Ramsey, the most sought after "Action Star" in Hollywood, and he plays Jiff...a "Kit Ramsey" look-alike. Jiff turns out to be the best surprise of the movie, imagine a very, very, very nerdy Eddie Murphy, thats Jiff. Bobby Bowfinger fills out the rest of his "movie's" characters with unknown, struggling actors. But he still lacks that "big name" movie star...he gets it in the form of "Kit Ramsey" but Kit Ramsey has absolutely NO IDEA he is in the movie, Im not going to explain how thats possible so you gonna have to watch the movie or read another review.
BOWFINGER.....a funny ride. I recommend this film to all fans of comedy and make sure you pay attention to the dialogue it's hilarious. The low grades im giving this film are because I would have enjoyed watching more of Jiff, and the "relationship" between Kit and Jiff doesn't get explored enough. Regardless, this is a fun film. And as far as it being suitable for children....well thats what the "Ratings" are for....Parents should pre-view it and then use discretion, how logical is that??!! |
