Not your normal kid's movie

The story starts on the high note left over from the first Babe movie but quickly turns dark.
In average kid's movies the hero gets into some sort of comedic trouble. Then they spend the remainder of the movie putting things right (or finding a way out of the trouble). The trouble is usually made light of and we always know our hero will come through in the end.
Babe: Pig in the City seems to start out that way when our hero lands his owner in a hospital bed unable to care for the farm. But Babe CONTINUES to get into more and more trouble throughout the film. It doesn't let up. In every scene Babe gets himself further from his goal. Viewers (like myself) wonder how, if at all will Babe ever surmount such adversity. The movie is so cruel to our hero that we wonder if the film makers will actually give us a happy ending! And Babe's problems are not your run-of-the mill trouble either. It gets weird! Clothes wearing monkeys, Mickey Rooney as a washed up clown, strange dog gangs, pig nosed strangers, singing cats, unusual neighborhoods, and a paraplegic dog on wheels are all somehow involved in Babes woes.
Since this movie is NOT what I expected - I LOVED IT! It actually surprised me and took me to another world for 90 min. I was really rooting for Babe because his peril felt real!
Some kids will enjoy this movie but others may feel bad for the pig. Or they might get weirded out by the monkey family, the low flying planes, or the starving animals.
*****SPOILER ALERT*****
If you hang on there is a happy ending. SO HAPPY that it will tickle kids and adults alike. In fact, it's a bit over the top goofy. If the ending wasn't so gosh darn cuddly, cute, and slapstick laughable I would have rated it higher. |
