A very strong and compelling story like the one that is told in American History X depends on a main character equaly strong. I already knew Norton was one of the great names in 20th century acting, but I had no idea he had this in him. His character owns every scene he appears in, being almost invincibly strong without even raising his voice, especially in the beginning of the movie as after his prison visit, as the devil turned human.
The danger of any Neo Nazi movie is that the movie makers turn it into a judgement against the movement. Don´t get me wrong, ofcourse these types of organisations are extremely inhumane and dangerous to me, but when I see a movie about this, i´m not looking for the film to tell me: "These people are very very bad." This I know, tell me something new.
This movie teaches the viewer how a person can fall down so deep as to tattoo a Swastika on their chest and curb kick another human being and smile about it. Big compliments for this. Not just the grusome facts (They are definetly present!) but the reason why too.
Overall, a sad, strong, disgusting, compelling and moving story that at least told me something I didn´t think of before. |
