If you do not like or understand Shakespeare, do not watch this movie! It is as simple as that!

The movie is stunningly beautiful, and there are some well-done performances. You may want to learn more about the play before watching the movie, though, because you will more than likely be lost. The Shakespearean dialogue can be confusing.

There are some differences in the movie and the original play. For example: in the play it takes place in Athens in the 16th century. In the movie it appears to take place in Tuscany in the 19th century. Aside from that, the movie follows the play very well.

Kevin Kline offers the best performance as Nick Bottom, the cocky actor, but Michelle Pfieffer is radiant as fairy queen, Titania. The two pairs of star-crossed lovers, Calista Flockart, Christian Bale, Dominic West, and Anna Friel, offer pretty good performances, not the best though.
