Brad Bird, the
Oscar-winning director of "Ratatouille" and "The Incredibles,"
will revisit the 1906 San Francisco earthquake in his
live-action feature debut.
"1906" centers on a college student whose investigation of
his father's murder uncovers a web of deceit that has left the
city vulnerable to the sort of fire that breaks out in the
aftermath of the great quake.
The original script was written by John Logan ("Sweeney
Todd"), and Bird is doing a rewrite. The project is a
co-production between Warner Bros. and Disney/Pixar.
Warner Bros. released Bird's 1999 2-D-animated film "The
Iron Giant." The acclaimed movie was a box office
disappointment, prompting pundits to suggest that Warner Bros.
failed to market the film aggressively enough.
In the period since, animation -- especially the 3-D
computer-generated variety -- has become big business, and Bird
has become one of the biggest and most respected names in the
medium. He has worked in live action before, directing an
episode of "Amazing Stories" in 1987.
