The spark for Ruth Anson's new film Desperately Seeking Paul McCartney is genuine. Back in the mid-1960's, when she was a teenage reporter for L.A.'s KABC-TV, she got the opportunity to interview Beatle Paul McCartney. When she asked if he had any plans to wed, he replied, 'Only if you'll marry me.'
From that premise, footage of which opens the film, Anson – now a married mother and college professor – fronts the fantastical mockumentary yarn of trying to reconnect with McCartney to reminisce. From the practice session with a McCartney impersonator (Jeff Toczynski) to an attempt to crash the Grammys, her film sounds very much like a goofier version of Brian Hertzlinger's documentary My Date with Drew, about his pursuit of dream girl Drew Barrymore.
Desperetaly Seeking Paul McCartney will screen as part L.A.'s upcoming 2008 Mockfest (May 16th – 18th). Around the same time that Anson did the press conference routine with McCartney, she also appeared as a contest on What's My Line?. Later on, she guest starred on The Brady Bunch and an episode of Quincy.
There's really nothing quite like Mockfest. Some of this year's other entries include Towards the Moon with Fellini, in which a separate gal pursues the famous Italian director; the self-explanatory Being Michael Madsen; and 305, a feature-length expansion of the YouTube short film hit about the plight of five additional shamed Spartan soldiers.
