| Hellboy in the Comics |
| Pulled from Hell in a Nazi plot, a demon toddler is raised on an American army base. Grown up, Hellboy works for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, a federal agency that protects the world from monsters even bigger than him. He gets help from Abe Sapien, a gill-breathing fish guy, and Liz Sherman, a female firestarter. Together, they fend off Nazi sorcerers and the mad monk Rasputin. |
| Changes for the Screen |
| • |
The Hellboy/Liz Sherman romance is invented for the movie. In the books, they're just good friends. |
| • |
Kroenen, the gas-masked Nazi, is toughened up into a blade-wielding assassin. |
| • |
In the comics, people aren't fazed by Hellboy's odd appearance, but the characters' outsider status is a strong theme throughout the film. |
