Welcome to Greg's Previews of Upcoming Movies, which since 2002 has been based here at Yahoo! Movies after getting its start as Upcomingmovies.com back in 1997. My name is Greg Dean Schmitz, and I founded Greg's Previews, which I'm proud to say is the most popular Internet destination that concentrates on movies that haven't been released yet, whether they be scheduled for next week, next year or years from now. The site was born out of a frustration with the amount of coverage most other media seemed to deal with movies that were more than a few weeks away from theaters, which especially before the birth of the World Wide Web, was slim-to-none. Sure, magazines like "Entertainment Weekly" and "Premiere" publish preview features a couple of times of years, but often, because of shifting release dates, much of the content would be obsolete a week later. Especially frustrating was the quest to find out more about the new movies of favorite actors, actresses, directors, and writers. "Back in the day", a fan had to scour interviews, hoping that the writer would ask about their next projects, and often, the reader only got a sentence or two at most. You see, I've always thought an integral element of the moviegoing experience was the anticipation. This might be because I grew up in the 1970's and 1980's, as Hollywood went through an integral shift towards "event movies", and the amount of money and effort that went into promoting movies grew by exponential leaps and bounds. In 30 years, we've gone from an era when the "coming attractions" shown in a given theater were literally for next week's show, to today's standards, when it's not unusual for a studio to put out the first teaser over a year before release (often before filming is even finished). The need for some sort of current, easy-to-access way of finding out about new movies was probably in demand way before 1997, but it was the Internet that allowed the idea to take form. As I started the site, initially for myself and friends, as Bookhouse's Previews of Upcoming Movies, I quickly realized the advantages an Internet "movie previews" site would have over its print peers, and they were many: it would be available 24/7, it could be perpetually updated, and the user would be able to find movies by a variety of ways, rather than magazine preview features that are usually by date (not much good if you just know the actor, title, or director). The actual content of the site could be uniquely mine as well, as I became my own editor, publisher, manager, publicist, designer, you-name-it. Whenever I worked on Upcomingmovies.com, I felt free to inject my little bits of personality whenever and wherever I pleased, somehow straddling the line between straight facts and a more carefree editorial stance. Noticing that many of the other independent movie-related sites that were already quite active in 1997 seemed to focus on certain genres, and not necessarily every movie that got released, I also made an effort to cover, as much as one man can, as wide a gamut of movies. From the biggest blockbusters, to independent releases that only play in Los Angeles and New York, covering all conceivable genres, my goal was to make Upcomingmovies.com a one-man stop, the first place people think of when they're looking for movies that aren't released yet.
