My original review of the film was pretty negative. I think I was being too much of a X-Men fanboy and not enough of a film lover. As a film, this movie is right up there with the best comic book adaptations. Like The Dark Knight, this film is bending genre conventions and giving us a pseudo period piece, taking the X-Men out of their boring Vancouver as Westchester mansion and injecting them into the world.
If mutants really did exist, don't you think they would use their influence to affect world economics and politics? It's more interesting than the usual supervillain scheme.
The cast is good, especially Fassbender and Bacon as arch enemies, Magneto and Sebastian Shaw, and the always impressive Rose Byrne. Kudos for casting Michael Ironside and Ray Wise in cameo appearances. On the flip side, I found McAvoy's Xavier to be an arrogant prick, with little to offer, Jennifer Lawrence is too girly to be an effective Mystique and the less said about January Jones, the better.
