It wasn’t until 10 years after Pixar’s Toy Story, that Disney finally embraced animation with a relatively disappointing Chicken Little in 2005 followed by an equally dismal Meet the Robinsons in 2007. It took another 2 tries for Disney to overcome this steep learning curve to give us, Wreck-It Ralph, the heart-rending story that hits all demographic targets, from Gen X-ers familiar who grew up with retro arcade games like Pacman and Qbert to Gen Y-ers who spent their youth collecting golden rings with Sonic the hedgehog to Post Millennials who posts high scores on Angry Birds.
The movie’s breathtaking animation transitions seamlessly between pixilated 8-bit characters in old school games like Fix-It Felix and Qbert to the ultra high definition games like First Person Shooter, Hero’s Duty and candylicious racing game, Sugar Rush. The plot is easy to follow with many nostalgic nods for gamers of all ages but what makes this movie truly memorable are the heart-tugging moments between the Villain/Hero-wannabe Ralph and mischievous “pixlexic” Vanellope von Schweetz.
This unlikely duo, meets under less than amiable circumstances, with Vanellope stealing Ralph’s hard-earned medal which he needs to gain acceptance in his game. In an bid to win back Ralph’s medal and to prove herself as a racer, Ralph and Vanellope team up. Along the way, the pair discover they have more in common than they thought and what follows is a plot which takes the audience through an emotional roller coaster.
In my opinion, Wreck-It Ralph is a definite must watch and in my books, the best animated film this year and probably the best animated movie since up.
