This heart-warming movie which, like Christmas itself, never grows old, is a must-see for the entire family every Christmas season. Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen are at their most outstanding as actors in this movie. Dean Jagger does come across, as he is supposed to, as a hard-yet-soft general.
The story revolves around two soldiers (Crosby as Bob Wallace and Kaye as Phil Davis)who decide to go into show business after, on Christmas Eve of 1944, Wallace is rescued by Davis after a
wall is bombed and almost falls on Wallace; to go into show business as partners is the "small favor" Wallace can do for Davis. And so it happens. One night in Miami, the two entertainers see the performance of the Haynes sisters: Betty Haynes is played by Rosemary Clooney, and Judy Haynes is played by Vera-Ellen.(The two men see this to do a favor for a friend in the army, the girls' brother.) When Phil Davis later learns that the two sisters are going to be at an inn in Vermont, Phil, without telling Bob, decides to go there instead of to New York, as they had originally planned. They meet the girls on the train to Vermont, planning to enjoy snow there, something which the warm temperatures have prevented from falling. And much ot their surprise, they meet the innkeeper Sargeant Waverly, played by Jagger. Through a series of miscommunication, plans to bring business to the inn, which greatly needs it, are almost flawed. But, snow does later come and all miscommunication is resolved. The true spirit of Christmas comes through when Wallace, on television, makes a pitch for all the members of General Waverly's command to go surprise him at a special performance on Christmas Eve, but reminds them that nothing they can see is in it for them. To General Waverly, the Haynes sisters, Phil Davis, and Bob Wallace, happiness comes as, again, does the snow on Christmas Eve.
"Snow", "Count your Blessins Instead of Sheep", "Blue Skies", and of course "White Christmas", are some of the songs that make the movie memorable, but, again, so does the story. You can't miss this one.
