Wonderful comedy

On paper, you wouldn't expect a movie about escaped convicts on Devil's Island played by Bogart, Ustinov, and Aldo Ray to be a comedy or an uplifting feel-good story. Yet that's exactly what you get, a sweet and charming tale about hardened criminals softened by an endearing, hard on their luck family, played by Joan Bennett, Leo Carrol, and Gloria Talbot. Basil Rathbone gives a fantastic performance as the cold-hearted cousin Andre.

The dialogue is crisp and witty. The acting is magnificent. All put together by the incomprable Michael Curtiz. Long an overlooked gem, it's one of my favorite non-Hitchcock movies of the 1950s.
