New Elective Affinities

You may dislike these people or disapprove of them. But the unfolding of the relations among them is fascinating to follow, and the acting is excellent. Having Mark Ruffalo be so different than in his other films helps this film to surprise. Laura Dern has certainly come a long way since "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains."

The Characters in "We Don’t Live Here Anymore" are like the constituents in a chemical equation. Change one valence, and everything else in the system is changed. Terry (Laura Dern) says that adultery has “its own morality”: i.e., a set of rules that govern what results. Something like that has been done before—in a much more innocent way—long ago in Goethe’s "Elective Affinities." Well done!
