Waterworld Manages to Stay Afloat

The water-logged Kevin Costner spectacle Waterworld received some of the worst reviews of the 1990s and it sank at the box office, but I think that people missed out on a strange yet wholly unique set of visuals. The art direction is straight out of Mad Max but Mad Max hasn't had an adventure on the high seas and that's the creative spark that caused me to enjoy this much-maligned production. It also features some fun performances from the late Dennis Hopper and Michael Jeter. James Newton Howard composed a brilliant score that works as a stand alone entertainment of its own. Kevin Costner isn't much fun but I argue that we're not meant to root for his character but to see his character evolve and become more human due to his friendship with Tina Majorino's character. That the friendship between them works so well makes the high powered climax satisfying. I'm probably in the minority but I think Waterworld is a lot of fun even if it is flawed.
