I ended up seeing this on DVD today, after having been scared off of it because the vibe it had during it's run in the theaters had me feeling like this would be one of those massive failures that happen all too often when the vision between graphic novel isn't fully realized in the movie.
But in the case of this movie, I think for the most part it did. Granted, I was very high on this movie for most of it's long 2:40 minutes because the visuals were nailed, and the sounds were terrific. Costuming was also nailed and the characters (except for President Nixon) were exactly as I was expecting them to be, given my memories of the novel.
But another reviewer here did make mention of something that I had to agree on. There was no overwhelming sense of dread from an oncoming nuclear war, which fueled the graphic novel series and really put the grittiness into Watchmen. I never felt a bit of the despair I had felt reading this many years ago, when it seemed like the only help for humanity was the super heroes, who were too messed up to even help themselves. Instead, I only felt awe at the amazing abilities they showed and marveled at the way they could still take out bad guys and while that made the movie quite fun, it wasn't quite the tone it should have been.
All in all, I'll still say this movie was very good, and definitely merits watching again, even with the huge run time, and for now, stands as one of the better super hero movies to have come along.
