Where do I begin? I'd looked forward to seeing this movie for months. What a disappointment. All the main characters and most of the incidental ones mouth their lines without a hint of sincerity. The boy's parents are unbelievable in their supposed desperate poverty, as is the landlord in his heartlessness. The series of characters that come into possession of the horse are no more interesting than stick figures. The soldier gets shot? Oh, well. Some deserters get executed? Yawn. The farm of the Frenchman and his granddaughter is raided? Ummm, okay. I didn't care a bit about any of them. The gimmicky reunion of the boy and his horse, which should have been a real tear-jerker, is simply flat and boring. And what about that strange, emotionless ending when the boy is walking his horse home in silhouette against a setting sun? Can't a mother manage even a gasp of joy? No? Well, what about a hurried step? Uh, uh. A hand to the mouth? A tear? No, nothing, nothing at all.
As for positives about the film, I can say the scene of the horse trapped in barbed-wire and its rescue is excellent. I laughed out loud when the wire cutters are thrown up from the German side and that truly was the only emotion I felt except for eye-rolling during the whole movie. Oh, yeah, the photography is great and the horse is beautiful. The end.
