I made it a point to see this film even though I've heard nothing but disappointing reviews, and I can't say that I was expecting a masterpiece, but I was really impressed by Richard E. Grant's directorial debut, and fascinated that he penned it based on his childhood growing up in Southeast Africa, then ruled by the British. The landscape in this film is amazing, as is the supporting cast. Gabriel Byrne, Miranda Richardson, and Emily Watson were all fantastic, and although a famous movie critic felt Nicholas Hoult's performanc was "creepy", I was impressed. This film seemed very real to me, even though the characters all live in a surreal atmosphere of love, adultery, and embarrasing upper crust society at a time of great change. It was a great reflection of how love is not always easy, even within families, and still how it seems to affect everything in life we do. I give you my two thumbs up :)
