Vicky Cristina Barcelona(2008)- User Reviews

Good, Also Great, and Also a Little Shaky

Essentially based around a sappy, seductive guy and his three love interests, Vicky Cristina Barcelona surprisingly carries very, very well, and in the end, it does not disappoint one bit.

Woody Allen is one smart director. And he definitely has his favorites, and one of those is Scarlett Johansson. I'm not her biggest fan but she plays this role with relative ease, as many of her personality-filled, free-spirited, seductive roles that she tends to fit so well, because that's probably how she really is.

It is based around two EXTREMELY different friends who travel to Barcelona for the summer. The personal growth they receive about who they really are and what they really want in life is dramatically catalyzed once they meet this handsome, semi-charming, and blunt bachelor.

Allen's script is so intelligently weaved. He's able to bring the viewer to have the exact feelings about the characters at precise moments in the movie so he is able to dynamically expound on each one. Allen is also a master of the unexpected, and right when you think the movie falls into somewhat of a rut, he gives you something fun to work with.

It's not for maybe your typical movie-viewer, but it's a semi-romantic flick with a lot of thought, exploration, and intrigue, and it can raise a lot of questions for the audience. And I was thoroughly surprised by Rebecca Hall's acting performance. I'm really starting to like her.

That being said, it has its slow parts, dry parts, and #$%$ parts. But I did enjoy it overall. I'm tempted to lean towards a B+ but I think a B suits it. Definitely a quality film though.
